  • 1840 - Marriage of Robert Schumann, age 30, to Clara Wieck, on the day before her 21st birthday.

  • 1866 - The Black Crook opens at Niblo's Garden. The opening night performance on lasted a bottom-numbing five and a half hours.

  • 1896 - Down in Poverty Row recorded by George J. Gaskin begins a run of 4 weeks at #1 on the US charts.

  • 1910 - Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 8, the Symphony of a Thousand, is premiered in Munich

  • 1928 - Anton Webern's String Trio is premiered in Siena

  • 1932 - Premire of Villa-Lobos' "Bachianas Brasilieras" No. 1, in Rio de Janerio.

  • 1937 - Premiere of Milhaud's "Suite Provençale" in Venice, conducted by the composer

  • 1954 - Premiere of Bernstein's "Serenade" (after Plato's "Symposium") at Teatro La Fenice in Venice, with composer conducting and Isaac Stern the violin soloist

  • 1958 - George Russell records Manhattan with a band including John Coltrane, Art Farmer, Bob Brookmeyer and Bill Evans

  • 1966 - First episode of The Monkees is broadcast on NBC Television

  • 1967 - Premiere of Kokkonen's Symphony No. 3, in Helsinki

  • 1969 - Premiere of Henri Lazarof: Cello Concerto, in Oslo, Norway.

  • 1996 - Controversy follows The Eagles when the band dedicates "Peaceful Easy Feeling" to Saddam Hussein at a United States Democratic Party fundraiser held in Los Angeles.
