1999 in Music History


Music Events:

  • 01-11 - During the American Music Awards, Billy Joel is awarded the Special Award of Merit for his "inspired songwriting skills" and "exciting showmanship."

  • 01-12 - Britney Spears releases her debut album, Baby One More Time. The album hits number one on the charts. The first single released from the album, also titled "Baby One More Time" also hits number one on the Billboard Hot 100

  • 02-14 - Elton John appears as himself in a special Valentine's Day episode of the animated series The Simpsons

  • 02-15 - "Rolling Stones Day" is declared in Minnesota by Governor (and former Rolling Stones bodyguard) Jesse Ventura

  • 02-20 - Trace Adkins performs his first concert following surgery for tendon damage and a broken ankle. Contrary to doctors orders, Adkins does not remain seated during the performance.

  • 02-25 - The Artist Formerly Known as Prince files a lawsuit against nine Web sites for copyright and trademark infringement, claiming that the websites sell bootlegged recordings and offer unauthorized song downloads.

  • 03-01 - Sony Music Distribution raises wholesale prices on audio Compact Discs by 8 cents

  • 03-02 - The House of Blues in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Mandalay Bay Resort. Bob Dylan performs a concert at the club and is joined by U2's lead singer Bono for an encore of "Knockin' On Heaven's Door".

  • 03-06 - A 67 year old George Jones is seriously injured in a car accident while on his way home. Jones' Lexus crashes into a bridge at about 1:30 p.m. It is later revealed that alcohol was a factor in the accident.

  • 03-15 - Marilyn Manson is injured when he slips and falls during a concert at the Great Western Forum in Inglewood, California. Manson's performance is cut short.

  • 04-19 - Neil Young performs at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Due to a mistake by a Madison Square Garden staff member, the marquee read "Bob Dylan, Tonight at 8pm". Young jokingly introduced one of his guitar players as Bob Dylan during the show.

  • 04-20 - Billy Joel performs at the Meadowlands in New Jersey. Joel announces that this would be his last public pop music concert. Joel also announces plans on devoting his future efforts to classical music.

  • 04-28 - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

  • 04-30 - Columbine High School massacre: Aerosmith visits Columbine High School shooting victim Lance Kirklin in a Colorado hospital before a concert in Denver, Colorado. Kirklin was one of 28 wounded in the April 20 shooting, 13 others were killed

  • 06-01 - Brad Paisley's debut album, Who Needs Pictures, released.

  • 06-02 - Backstreet Boys smashes the old first-week sales record of Grath Brooks' 1.08 million, with (Millennium) which sold over 1.13 million in its first week and was the first album to sell over 500,000 copies at least 2 weeks. The album holds at No. 1 first-weeks sales record of the 90's.

  • 06-04 - The Kinleys' "Just Between You and Me" album certified gold

  • 06-06 - Backstreet Boys started a five week run at No.1 on the US album chart with ‘Millennium’, the US boy bands first No.1 album.

  • 06-17 - Groundbreaking ceremonies for the new Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum

  • 06-25 - Lucinda Williams' "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road" album certified gold

  • 07-14 - First performance of Alan Jay Kernis' Concierto de Dance Hits. Minnesota Orchestra conducted by David Miller, guitarist David Tanenbaum in Minneapolis, MN

  • 07-14 - Clint Black's "Nothin' But the Taillights" certified platinum and "Greatest Hits" certified double platinum.

  • 07-17 - Bills, Bills, Bills recorded by Destiny's Child begins a run of week at #1 on Billboard''s Hot 100.

  • 07-17 - Lonestar's "Amazed" began an eight-week stay atop the country singles chart.

  • 07-21 - Shania Twain's longform video "Shania Twain Live" certified platinum

  • 07-24 - Wild, Wild West recorded by Will Smith featuring Dru Hill and Kool Mo Dee begins a run of 1 week at #1 on Billboard''s Hot 100.

  • 07-31 - Genie in a Bottle recorded by Christina Aguilera begins a run of 5 weeks at #1 on Billboard''s Hot 100.

  • 08-05 - Music written by Johann Sebastian Bach was found in the Ukraine. The music was thought to have been destroyed over 50 years ago during World War II. The material was found in the musical estate of Carl Phillipp Emanuel Bach, who was on of J.S. Bach's children.

  • 08-11 - John Michael Montgomery's "Greatest Hits" certified platinum

  • 08-14 - Tell Me It's Real recorded by K-Ci & JoJo peaks at #2 on the Top 100 chart for 1 week.

  • 08-19 - Dwight Yoakam's debut album, Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc., certified double platinum

  • 08-24 - Christina Aguilera releases her self titled debut album. The album and first single, "Genie In A Bottle" both went to number one on the charts.

  • 08-28 - Premiere of Philip Glass' Symphony No. 5 ("Requiem, Bardo and Nirmanakaya"), at the Salzburg Festival in Austra, with Dennis Russell Davies conducting soloists, choruses, and the Vienna Radio Symphony

  • 08-31 - The Dixie Chicks' Fly album released

  • 09-04 - Premiere of Philip Glass' new filmscore to accompany the classic 1931 Tod Browning horror film "Dracula" (starring Bela Lugosi), by the Kronos Quartet at Telluride, Colorado.

  • 09-16 - Premiere of Libby Larsen's "Solo Symphony," by the Colorado Symphony, Marin Alsop conducting

  • 09-22 - Trombonist Roswell Rudd records Broad Strokes with vocaist Sheila Jordan

  • 10-05 - Trombonist Steve Turee records In The Spur of the Moment with bassist Buster Williams and drummer Jack DeJohnette

  • 10-19 - Eurythmics releases first album in 10 years, Peace.

  • 12-14 - BMI announces the most played songs on American radio and television in the 20th century.

  • 12-29 - Former Beatle George Harrison is stabbed several times in the chest by an unknown assailant, who had broke into Harrison's home. Harrison's wife wrestled the knife out the assailant's hand before the police arrived. The man apparently believed that Harrison was the devil.
